Creating a designated space for reading is not only important in fostering a great reading relationship, but it’s ALSO fun, and helps stretch your creative muscles. Below, you’ll find a list of the absolute basic things you need for a child’s reading nook, PLUS some great products to grab for them!
The second most important thing, besides books to read, is a place to put them. A small shelf is absolutely appropriate (you don’t want to overwhelm them anyway). If your child is still a crawler, put the “fun” and durable books on the bottom shelves, and the one’s you’ll read to them higher up.
This is a wonderful, minimalist bookshelf with a lot of potential in any room!
These are fun, wall mounted magazine racks that make great small space book shelves!
There’s something to be said for simple cube shelves. The great thing about them, is that you can make your shelf fit your space, not the other way around.
Rugs are great to provide visual interest, and define the area of your reading nook. It’s also a great way to bring in a theme, and get creative!

In order to make their reading nook a space for your kids to want to be, decorating is necessary. You can hang artwork on the wall, or put some cool figures or book related toys on top of their shelf, but make it a place that’s fun to sit and read!
